Abstract
The landscape for doing business in America is marked by products liability litigation. Americans have gained a reputation for being extraordinarily litigious. While the existence of any products liability "crisis" is the subject of heated debate, the simple fact remains: potential legal exposure – civil, administrative and, in some instances, criminal – is a legitimate concern for any manufacturer. Embracing and implementing quality concepts, principles and techniques yields numerous rewards in the event of litigation. This paper considers the current legal climate, looks at factors relating to product liability, and gives details of some relevant cases. It examines the litigation benefits of a quality assurance framework and quality management and concludes that such systems are an advantage to a defense attorney defending such a company in case of litigation.

Abstract
Suggests that declining product quality and manufacturers′ social responsibility is of increasing concern to consumers and to manufacturers, who must bear the cost of such faulty practice. Reviews documented cases of poor quality products and matches them with the ethical theories of utilitarianism, universalism, rights, justice and Natural Law. Obligations to stakeholders are examined, and future research suggested.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the myriad ways record‐keeping can affect the course and outcome of products liability litigation. The examination includes an overview of the civil jury system in the USA, as well as an analysis of the benefits gained from instituting quality concepts and principles regarding the creation, management, storage and protection of quality‐related documents. Frequently the “star witness” in a products liability lawsuit is not a witness at all – it is a document. The written record a company generates plays a critical role in presenting a case to the jury in the event of litigation. With regard to retaining and storing company records, serious legal problems arise when documents are lost, damaged or destroyed without adequate explanation. Accordingly, embracing and implementing quality concepts and principles with regard to record‐keeping provides numerous rewards in the event of litigation.

Abstract
The goal of this chapter is to introduce the network paradigm for analyzing relational phenomena and organizing knowledge in higher education research. This introduction is presented by example: it analyzes knowledge on inter-organizational relationships of higher education institutions. The formation, maintenance, and impact of relationships are implicitly relational, although they have largely been understood as a consequence of institutional practices. Through the network paradigm, we show that focusing on relations we can develop new and more precise models to understand the antecedents, consequences, and characteristics of these networks.

Abstract
This chapter examines the application of learning analytics techniques within higher education – learning analytics – and its application in supporting “student success.” Learning analytics focuses on the practice of using data about students to inform interventions aimed at improving outcomes (e.g., retention, graduation, and learning outcomes), and it is a rapidly growing area of educational practice within higher education institutions (HEIs). This growth is spurring a number of commercial developments, with many companies offering “analytics solutions” to universities across the world. We review the origins of learning analytics and identify drives for its growth. We then discuss some possible implications for this growth, which focus on the ethics of data collection, use and sharing.

Abstract
Gives introductory remarks about chapter 1 of this group of 31 papers, from ISEF 1999 Proceedings, in the methodologies for field analysis, in the electromagnetic community. Observes that computer package implementation theory contributes to clarification. Discusses the areas covered by some of the papers ‐ such as artificial intelligence using fuzzy logic. Includes applications such as permanent magnets and looks at eddy current problems. States the finite element method is currently the most popular method used for field computation. Closes by pointing out the amalgam of topics.
